There are countless ways in which you can make Christmas more sustainable:
- Resist overbuying on food and freeze your leftovers.
- Wrap gifts in newspaper – you can choose articles or photos you liked, or paint over it to make your own designs.
- Give gifts of quality time and experiences.
- Support small and independent businesses rather than big corporations.
Don’t be afraid to take small steps and be flexible – doing one little thing differently will go a long way, while attempting to change completely will most likely result in more stress.
We’ve written before about positive consumption as one of the aspects of Snactivism. For everything you want to buy, you can probably choose a fairtrade or eco-conscious maker, supplier, or service-provider. It may seem like a small thing, but as consumers, you have purchasing power. Companies listen to you. Your choices matter and come together to make big impacts.
So what can Snactivists do to stay sustainable through the festive period? Our advice is that food is always a great gift – in many cultures it is seen as an expression of love, and is associated with enjoying life. It’s also a great way of supporting causes you care about, be it veganism, local food, or fighting food waste. It makes everyone happy: the gift recipient will have a yummy gift, while you will have used your purchasing power as a force of good and made a positive impact on the environment. A deliciously sustainable Christmas miracle!

Natasha made her first bottles of cordial from an Elder tree by her allotment. Her urban foraging hobby blossomed into a business, and today she turns fresh surplus fruit and herbs into delicious cordials like strawberry and sage or quince and vanilla. Who doesn’t love a seasonal cocktail! 🍸🍓🌿

Like magpie the bird, Hazel collects all kinds of shiny gems – surplus fruit from North London gardens and allotments – and preserves them into fruit cheeses: firm, smooth, with a slice-able texture and intense flavours.
